New Japan held an open tryout for prospective wrestlers yesterday at Shin-Kiba 1st Ring and, since it was free to fans, they drew an announced crowd of 150 spectators.
The prospective wrestlers were observed and graded by judges including New Japan stars Yuji Nagata, Hiroshi Tanahashi & Super Strong Machine as well as medical trainer Takeshi Misawa and President Takaaki Kitani. Also assisting in the auditions was current young lion (nickname for rookies/younger talent in the promotion) Yohei Komatsu.
In the end 13 prospects turned out and when it was over 2 were successful and chosen to join the promotion. One prospect, 22, has a wrestling & martial arts background and is hoping to represent Japan at the 2016 Olympics. The other, 21 year old Takumi Honjo (I think), is currently a student at the famed Animal Hamaguchi Gym, which has produced many top puroresu talents over the years and also has a judo background.
The fourth annual Open The Puroreso Gate Award winners will be announced within the next week or so. Click Here To Read What They're All About!
