On this Day in Pro Wrestling History, we lost a Great One!

1980 - The Matador (Jerry Stubbs) and Mike Stallings defeat Dennis Condrey and David Schultz in a rematch for the held-up NWA Southeastern Tag Team Title in Knoxville, Tennessee.
1984 - "The Yellow Rose of Texas" David Von Erich passes away at only 25 years old in a Tokyo, Japan hotel room during a tour with All Japan Pro Wrestling. His cause of death has been widely debated. Ric Flair said in his autobiography that he died from of drug overdose, with Bruiser Brody flushing the drugs before authorities arrived to cover it up. However, David's brother Kevin, World Class referee David Manning, and Gary Hart, on both Big Vision Entertainment and WWE's World Class documentaries, as well as the official autopsy report, say David died of a myocardial infarction (heart attack) due to acute enteritis (swelling of the small intestine), with the enteritis causing an intestinal rupture. David held All Japan's NWA United National Heavyweight Title at the time. In David's memory World Class would hold the David Von Erich Memorial Parade of Champions at Texas Stadium in Irving, Texas on May 6, at which Kerry Von Erich won the NWA World Heavyweight Title from Ric Flair.

1991 - El Signo defeats Gran Hamada for the UWA World Light Heavyweight Title in Mexico City, Mexico, ending Hamada's second reign.

1992 - Money, Inc. (Ted DiBiase and Irwin R. Schyster) defeat The Legion of Doom (Animal and Hawk) for the WWF Tag Team Title in Denver, Colorado. The Natural Disasters (Earthquake and Typhoon) proved that it was not smart to make them angry, as they cost LOD the title. Typhoon hit Hawk with a chair as Hawk was set up to deliver the Doomsday Device on DiBiase, knocking him from the top rope, and I.R.S. knocked Animal from the ring as well. All this happened while Sensational Sherri distracted the referee, allowing DiBiase to get the pin on the downed Hawk. The Disasters beat The Big Boss Man and Tito Santana earlier on in the show, and were originally scheduled to face LOD for the title, but the matches were switched by WWF President Jack Tunney. Tunney claimed The Natural Disasters had had enough unsuccessful attempts at winning the title.

1992 - Steve Doll defeats Ron Harris to win the NWA Pacific Northwest Heavyweight Title in Eugene, Oregon, beginning his third reign.

1983 - Scorpio and Mr. Tempest defeat The Mercenaries for the WWC North American Tag Team Title in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

1984 - David Von Erich defeats Michael Hayes in Dallas, Texas to win the NWA United National Heavyweight Title.

1985 - Jim Crockett Promotions held an event at the Civic Center in Savannah, Georgia. The results:
- American Starship Coyote (Scott Hall) defeated Frank Lang.
- NWA World Junior Heavyweight Champion Denny Brown defeated Sam Houston to retain the title.
- NWA World Television Champion Tully Blanchard (with Baby Doll) fought Magnum T.A. to a draw to retain the title.
- NWA World Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair defeated Wahoo McDaniel to retain the title.

1987 - Jeff Jarrett and Pat Tanaka defeat The Rock 'n' Roll RPM's (Mike Davis and Tommy Lane) in Memphis, Tennessee for the AWA Southern Tag Team Title. This ended the RPM's second reign.

1991 - Jumbo Tsuruta wins his third AJPW Triple Crown Title, ending the second reign of Stan Hansen in Matsumoto, Japan.

1992 - The WWF holds the fourth-annual Royal Rumble pay-per-view event at Knickerbocker Arena in Albany, New York. The results:
- In a dark match, Chris Walker defeated The Brooklyn Brawler by reverse decision.
- The New Foundation (Owen Hart and Jim Neidhart) defeated The Orient Express (Tanaka and Kato), when Hart pinned Tanaka after a Rocket Launcher.
- Roddy Piper defeated WWF Intercontinental Champion The Mountie by TKO with a sleeper hold to win the title.
- The Beverly Brothers (Blake and Beau Beverly) defeated The Bushwhackers (Luke and Butch), when Blake pinned Butch after a double axehandle from Beau.
- The Natural Disasters (Earthquake and Typhoon) defeated WWF Tag Team Champions The Legion of Doom (Hawk and Animal) by countout, LOD retained the title.
- Ric Flair, entering from the #3 spot, won the Royal Rumble match to win the vacant WWF World Title. The final two participants were Flair and Sid Justice (#29). Hulk Hogan (#26), who was just eliminated by Sid, was not pleased over the result and grabbed Sid's arm. This help from Hogan assists Flair's elimination of Sid to win the match. Flair was the ironman in this Rumble match, at 59:26, which broke Rick Martel's 1991 record of 52:17.

1992 - Art and Jesse Barr defeat The Bruise Brothers (Ron and Don Harris) for the NWA Pacific Northwest Tag Team Title in Vancouver, Washington, ending their fifth reign.

1983 - Southwest Championship Wrestling held a one-night 16-man tournament for the SCW Southwest Heavyweight Title. Dick Slater had left the promotion in December, leaving the title vacant. The results were:
First round:
- Tully Blanchard defeated Ken Lucas.
- Jerry Lawler defeated SCW Southwest Tag Team Champion Grappler #1.
- Scott Casey defeated Bobby Jaggers.
- Mike Graham defeated SCW Southwest Tag Team Champion Grappler #2.
- Adrian Adonis defeated Steve O.
- Ricky Morton defeated The Ninja Warrior.
- Tonga John defeated Baron Von Raschke.
- Bob Sweetan defeated Gino Hernandez.

1983 - Norman Frederick Charles wins a tournament for the vacant Southeast NWA United States Junior Heavyweight Title.

1983 - Rick Patterson and Randy Rich defeat Star Rider and Snake Williams in Cloverdale, British Columbia to win the vacant Vancouver NWA Canadian Tag Team Title.

1984 - Kevin, Kerry and Mike Von Erich win their third World Class Six-Man Tag Team Title, by defeating Chris Adams, Gino Hernandez and Jake Roberts in Fort Worth, Texas.

1989 - New Japan held an event at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, Soviet Union. The results were:
- Kuniaki Kobayashi defeated Takayuki Iizuka.
- Jushin Liger defeated Black Tiger.
- Masahiro Chono defeated Chimur Zarasov by submission.
- Wahka Eveloev and IWGP Tag Team Champion Shinya Hashimoto fought to a draw.
- Riki Choshu defeated Victor Zangiev.
- Bam Bam Bigelow defeated Vladimir Berkovich.
- Habieli Victachev defeated Hiroshi Hase by submission.

1999 - At a SmackDown! taping in Richmond, Virginia, a title match between WWF Intercontinental Champion Chris Jericho and Chyna results in a double-pinfall, after Jericho back suplexed Chyna onto a chair, with two referees counting both competitors' shoulders down for three. Stephanie McMahon would rule on the January 3 RAW that Jericho and Chyna were co-Intercontinental Champions.

2001 - Glacier and Jason Sugarman defeat The New Heavenly Bodies (Casanova Chris and Vivacious Vito) to win the NWA World Tag Team Title in Deland, Florida.

2001 - Wrecka defeats Ron Zombie for the Assault Championship Wrestling Hardcore Title in Meridan, Connecticut, ending Zombie's second reign.

2002 - Ring Of Honor held their "Final Battle" event in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, headlined by a 45-minute draw between Low Ki, Steve Corino, Samoa Joe and American Dragon in a four-way match.

1982 - After 14 years in operation, NWA Hollywood Wrestling, also known through the years as the North American Wrestling Alliance and World Wrestling Association (prior to NWA membership), closes. It had been run Gene and Mike LeBell. NWA Hollywood Wrestling had a working relationship with both New Japan Pro Wrestling and the Japan Wrestling Association/All Japan Pro Wrestling, during which time the NWA United National Heavyweight Title (now part of the All Japan Triple Crown) was created. The final NWA Hollywood champions were:
- NWA America's Heavyweight Champion: El Monarca
- NWA America's Tag Team Champions: Black Gordman and Master Lee
- NWA Beat the Champ Television Champion: Billy Anderson
- NWA Brass Knuckles Champion (Los Angeles version): Alexi Perez (last known champion in 1977)
- NWA California Women's Champion: Lola Gonzales

2004 - Vance Desmond defeats Rocky Reynolds to win the NWA Tri-State X Division Title in Parkersburg, West Virginia.

2005 - Chris Khan defeats Johnny Lightning for the NWA Tri-State Heavyweight Title in Parkersburg, West Virginia. Khan had another title win on the same show, as he and Vance Desmond defeated J.D. Escalade and The Juggulator to win the vacant NWA Tri-State Tag Team Title.

2006 - Former WCW wrestler Tyler Mane was hired to reprise Michael Meyers in the Rob Zombie directed remake of horror classic "Halloween."

1977 - Gama Singh and Igor Volkoff defeat The Black Avenger and Mike Sharpe for the NWA (Vancouver) Canadian Tag Team Title in Vancouver, British Columbia.

1979 - The Dynamite Kid and Sekigawa defeat Leo Burke and Hubert Gallant in a tournament final for the vacant Stampede International Tag Team Title in Calgary, Alberta.

1979 - Dusty Rhodes defeats Mark Lewin in Houston, Texas for the NWA Texas Brass Knuckles Title, beginning his second reign.

1980 - Chabela Romero defeats Vickie Williams in Mexico City, Mexico to win the Universal Wrestling Association Women's World Title, ending Williams' third reign.

1985 - Jerry Lawler wins his 36th of 43 AWA Southern Heavyweight Titles, ending the eighth reign of Bill Dundee in Memphis, Tennessee.

1985 - Kerry Brown defeats Davey Boy Smith for the Stampede North American Heavyweight Title in Edmonton, Alberta.

1938 - Cy Williams defeats Yvon Robért for the Montreal World Heavyweight Title in Montreal, Quebec, ending Robért's third reign.

1939 - Bily Weidner wins a tournament in Dayton, Ohio to become the first Midwest Wrestling Association World Junior Heavyweight Champion

1947 - Tug Carlson defeats Orville Brown in St. Joseph, Missouri to win the Midwest Wrestling Association World Heavyweight Title, ending Brown's ninth reign.

1957 - Dory Funk wins the Amarillo NWA North American Heavyweight Title for the third time by defeating Danny Plechas in Amarillo, Texas.

1962 - The Destroyer and Dan Moukian defeat Haystack Calhoun and Abe Jacobs to win the NWA International Television Tag Team Title in Los Angeles, California.

1963 - Sonny Myers and Pat O'Connor defeat The Mongolian Stomper and Mike Sharpe in a tournament final in Kansas City, Kansas to become the first Central States NWA North American Tag Team Champions.

In 1989, NWA Starrcade, held in Atlanta, Georgia, was promoted by WCW under the NWA banner. The event solely featured Round Robin tournaments between four individuals (The Iron Man Tournament) and four teams (The Iron Team Tournament). Points were awarded as follows: 20 for a pinfall or submission victory, 15 for a countout victory, 10 for a DQ victory, 5 for a draw and 0 for a loss

– In the Iron Man Tournament, Sting (40pts) defeats Lex Luger (35), Ric Flair (25) & The Great Muta (0)

2002 - Jeff Jarrett defeats Ron Killings for the NWA World Heavyweight Title in Nashville, Tennessee during an NWA:TNA Pay-per-view. This was the first NWA World Title win for Jarrett in TNA.  Jarrett would go on to hold the title a total of six times.

2002 – on Smackdown, Edge & Rey Mysterio defeat Kurt Angle & Chris Benoit in a 2-out-of-3 Falls Match to win the WWE Tag Team Titles

2005 – Akira Taue defeats Takeshi Rikio to win the GHC Heavyweight Title

1953 - Pepper Gomez & Johnny Demchuck win their second Northwest Tag Team Title from Doc Gallagher & Ivan Kameroff in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

1955 - Don McIntyre defeats Fred Blassie in Atlanta, Georgia to win the Georgia version of the NWA Southern Heavyweight Title, beginning his 11th reign and ending Blassie's second.

1959 - John Smith & Tosh Togo defeat Don & Bobby Fields in a tournament final for the Gulf Coast version of the NWA Southern Tag Team Title in Mobile, Alabama.

1966 - Both World Wrestling Association championships change hands when Hard Boiled Haggerty & El Shereef defeat Pedro Morales & Luis Hernandez to win the WWA Tag Team Title, and Mark Lewin defeats Lou Thesz for the WWA Heavyweight Title in Los Angeles, California.

1967 - Rock Rogowski (Ole Anderson) defeats Bob Orton, Sr. for the AWA Midwest Heavyweight Title in Omaha, Nebraska.
