Wrestle Kingdom 8 Announcements

The first 5 matches for New Japans biggest show of the year, Wrestle Kingdom, were announced today.

The show takes place on Jaunuary 4 at the Tokyo Dome and is normally a 9-10 match event so we're looking at about half of the card. Four big title matches have been announced including, after nearly two and a half years, the renewal of “The Rivalry”.

Here’s the card so far:

Kazushi Sakuraba & Yuji Nagata vs. Rolles & Daniel Gracie (for those who don’t follow MMA, the Gracies are THE name in MMA. The Gracie clan essentially founded Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu with their own style called Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, and also helped create the UFC)

IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Champions Nick & Matt Jackson will defend their titles against Alex Shelley & KUSHIDA, Alex Kozlov & Rocky Romero and Taichi & TAKA Michinoku in a 4-way for the titles.

IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion Prince Devitt vs. Kota Ibushi for the championship.

IWGP Intercontinental Champion Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi for the championship.

IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada vs. Tetsuya Naito for the championship.

"The Rivalry" is Nakamura-Tanahashi, since they made their debuts they've been the two top stars in the promotion and also heated rivals, Tanahashi as the top face and Nakamura as the top heel. They've squared off a number of times for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship over their careers, and as much as some people will consider a match for the Intercontinental title a step down, that title has semi-main evented the vast majority of big shows since it's inception and in reallity it's more of a confirmation that the Intercontinental title is only a small step below the Heavyweight Championship.
